When I was three, the preacher called me up in front of the congregation to sing. I didn't play anything. I just felt it and sang. At 15 I was reading about John Coltrane in the library on my lunch breaks. Later I studied jazz composition at New England Conservatory.
I'm the same artist now. Every score starts with one question: how does this make me feel? Then I find the sound for it. That's usually voice, often my own, along with live strings and a lot of gospel and soul.
I scored the feature Three Colors: Pan African, an anthology about Black life across the diaspora. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the American Black Film Festival and Audience Awards at Slamdance and the Chicago International Film Festival. My score for the short My Brother & Me is part of a film nominated for a 2025 NAACP Image Award, and I'm attached to score its feature adaptation, now in development with Fusion Entertainment.
I'm the first composer to receive two Reel Change grants from New Music USA and Christophe Beck. I've been a composer in residence at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Wildacres and the Wassaic Project, and I'm music director for The Mistletoes at Disney California Adventure.
I love working with directors who know what they want to feel. Bring me the film, and let's find its voice.
